May Road 1983

January 19, 2011

And here’s one taken by my sister, looking up at what was the dog’s garden.
Of note, there is Tregunter 3, on the site of Abermore Court, but see it’s only about 12 Stories, not 66!
I don’t know if it was demolished in ’93 and rebuilt, o just extended.

To the left, Aigberth Hall, a 1920’s building, and a 6 story building which i guess was called Valverde, but I’m not sure.

To the right, the Car parks for Aigberth Hall.

Here is Tregunter 3, which is on the site of Abermor Court, but… it is topped out at around 12 stories, later it was completed to 66 stories.

Tregunter 2 – 1954-83

Here is a picture of the second Tregunter building.

Tregunter 2 1958

Below is the “dogs garden” I mentioned before, and you probably can’t see the staircase from May road, past the Dogs Garden then following the Nullah up to Tregunter, prior to ’54 it ran up to the upper block of Tregunter, after that it finished at a blank wall. There was a bridge over the nullah to the Children’s Garden.

The podium was extended over the nullah to make a larger building site.

The Fah Wong’s house and the covered car park are built on the site of Friston Cottage. The staircase was original, and there were traces of the original paving as well.

Probably a good time to list the buildings I know about

Tregunter Mansions

June 11, 2009

To my knowledge, there have been 3 buildings called Tregunter. The first dates from after WW1 (pre 1919), in 2 blocks, one lower down accessed from May road, and parallel to it. And an upper block at right angles to it, which could have been accessed from Tregunter Path. Both blocks were 3 stories.
The second was built around 1954 was roughly the same place as the upper block, but parallel to May road, and it was extended over the watercourse from the hillside. it was 10 stories at one end up to 14 stories at the other. The lower block was demolished, and was left as a grass. There was a sign “the Dogs Garden”, I remember from around 1966. Yes, they set aside a field to lets dogs run around.
The third buildings date from around 1983 and are around 38 stories, Tregunter 3 is on the other side of the nullah, from the original block of tregunter, and is 66 stories, replacing another building on May road. (more to come later).

The Dog’s garden now supports the car park and swimming pool of Tregunter.

The house is called Friston Cottage. It was gone before I was born.

City Boundary Marker - Old Peak Road

City Boundary Marker - Old Peak Road

I lived on Old Peak Road from 1961 to 1975,  about 50yards from here, finding this marker stone was the first time I realized the city is called Victoria. I’m interested in the changes in the buildings, mostly from about 1890 to 1960 – that is, before I was there.
